Release Day--Wishes Come True
Today is the release of the Christmas Magic anthology from Still Moments Publishing that includes my short novella, Wishes Come True. The evolution of this story has been different than some of my others. I started it years ago as a potential submittal to the confession magazines. In that format, only first person POV is used and I aimed for 5-6,000 words. As I wrote, I introduced more characters to round out the heroine Tora’s personal and profession lives. Soon I was past word count and couldn’t figure out where to cut. So the story was sidelined.
Then I thought about changing the storyline to include her mother and grandmother (who are in Arizona), expand the story with their sub-plots, and write a full-length novel. As I worked with that idea, I grew dissatisfied because the focus wasn’t on Tora’s issues and again, the story was set aside.
This summer, I discovered the call for submissions to this holiday anthology and knew I wanted to resurrect the story. Unfortunately, in the spring I’d had a computer crash and lost several years’ worth of story ideas and works-in-progress. I’m thankful that I found a copy of the story on a flash drive at the bottom of my computer bag. What I’d written all those years ago definitely needed freshening because my current writing style is less wordy and includes more sensory detail.
Here’s the blurb:
Tora can’t wait to sell the family bakery run by generations of Hammond women and seek excitement outside of Dorado, Texas. Widower Ryan Dawson, the town’s star quarterback from a decade ago, returns to his hometown with plans to develop a sporting goods store. He also hopes a small town Christmas will cheer up his five-year-old daughter, Jenna, still recovering from the loss of her mother. Will the spark of interest Tora sees in Ryan’s eyes be the excitement she’s looking for?
