Guest Release Promotion–Eagle Eye by Darcy Flynn

I had so much fun linking Jillian Jeffrey, a character from my first book, Keeper of My Heart, with the second book in my “Like No Other” Series. My readers wanted Jill’s story told, and I’m happy they insisted.

Could one little mistake derail everything she’s worked for?

Undercover journalist, Cameron Phillips, is known for his forthright exposé articles uncovering scandals of New York City’s rich and famous. Using the pseudonym Eagle Eye to hide his identity, he is free to wield his finger pointing, no-holds-barred articles at leisure.

Jillian Jeffrey, teen fashion industry’s latest darling, has a heart for the less fortunate. Her goal is to raise enough money for fashion icon Anna Delany’s, Like No Other charity foundation. The donation will not only keep the charity afloat, but will place Jill in the running for a coveted position on LNO’s board of directors.

In a moment of weakness, at the charity gala, Jill reluctantly accepts a bet from her ex-boyfriend and uses a homeless man to raise twenty thousand dollars. Unknown to Jill, the homeless guy is the cynical, undercover journalist, and Jill has just become his latest exposé target.

In a twist of fate, Cameron is soon hired to shadow Jill as she volunteers with the charity. Shorthaired and clean-shaven, he looks nothing like the bearded, disheveled man Jill had encountered the night of the gala. During their time together, he not only discovers the noble reason behind the bet, but witnesses first hand his article’s negative impact on her business. Faced with the prospect of losing her, will Cameron come up with an antidote for Eagle Eye’s toxic exposé before Jill loses everything she’s worked for?

EXCERPT

“Okay. I admit it. I was having coffee in the bistro near the park when I spotted you. So, I followed you here.”

An incredulous expression crossed his face. “You do see the weirdness in this don’t you?”

“I felt badly for what Sandra said last week.”

“It was the truth, wasn’t it?”

“To a point, but—”

“Look. An abandoned subway is no place for a spoiled socialite. This place is dangerous.”

“You think I’m spoiled?”

“Yes and twenty thousand dollars richer.”

“The twenty thousand was for charity.”

“I guess that made what you did to me okay?”

“No. Of course not.” She sighed. “Look, I admit that I’ve done fairly well for myself. But it hasn’t always been that way.”

“You’re a Jeffrey. It’s always been that way, sweetheart.”

She pulled her hands away from the flame and clasped them to her chest. “What do you mean?”

“Wealthy, wrapped up in yourself, and according to the society pages, One of New York City’s wealthiest families back in town,” he mocked. “Everyone who’s anyone in this city knows about the Jeffrey girls of Scarsdale.”

“Girls?”

“Your sisters.”

“Oh, of course, them.” First Mark and now him. No wonder he had ill feelings toward her. He thought she was one of those Jeffreys.

“So, you think because of that you know me?”

“Not you personally, but…” He shrugged.

“When you’ve met one high society dame, you’ve met them all. Is that it?”

“Dame? Now there’s a word.” The corners of his mouth lifted. “First hobo and now dame. You and your friends should get out more.”

For one second, all she saw was his to-die-for half-smile. That along with his disheveled appearance was quite a package.

“Well, according to your earlier comment, my friends and I get out plenty.”

He gazed down at her. His crooked smile still played around his lips and his eyes held a sudden twinkle that disarmed her. But she couldn’t help notice the note of disdain behind that charming twinkle. She’d used him, coaxed him into a glamorous environment, then humiliated him. It probably wouldn’t make any difference as to what he thought of her, so let him think what he wanted.

“You look like you could use a drink.” Will splashed gold liquid into a glass and handed it to her.

“No, thank you.”

“Suit yourself.” He sat down opposite her and crossed one leg over the other. Sipping his whiskey, he gave her look for look. “You know, I can do this all day and night.”

“So what? Does that mean I’m not allowed to sleep while I’m here?”

“Of course you’ll be allowed to sleep. As many nights here as it takes.” He grinned, knowing full well it would infuriate her even more.

She raised her chin a fraction. “You’re hateful. But with your history, I shouldn’t be surprised.”

“Finally, we seem to be getting somewhere. And we have a history?”

She dropped her gaze from his and stared at his chest.

“Please, enlighten me?” While he waited for a response, he swirled the tumbler in his hand, causing the ice cube to clink against the glass.

Her long lashes fluttered against her cheek, making her appear nervous, which he highly doubted.

“Why don’t you just spit it out?” he said. “While I’m in a listening mood.”

She raised her eyes to his. “I have something to say to you, all right. But I will pick the time and the place to do it.”

“Ah, a woman who takes control. I like that.”

Her sparkling eyes clouded with doubt and uncertainty. She was finding him hard to read. For the moment, that suited him just fine. A woman with her designs needed to be kept on her toes. Poetic justice, as he’d had to learn the art of being unreadable because of women like her.

“Okay,” he said. “I’ll start.” He set his tumbler on the side table, never taking his eyes from her face. “You’ve disliked me from the first day I met you. Like most men, I have the hunter instinct. And you, my dear Miss Sullivan, with your glittering, green, accusatory eyes, tossed me a dare I frankly couldn’t ignore. And whether you believe it or not, what you said to me was ‘come and get me.’”

Her expressive eyes flared.

“I did no such thing. I wanted nothing to do with you. You two-faced, arrogant…” She looked him up and down. “You and your hurtful, callous words.”

Clare puffed up, reminding him of a threatened parrot.

He stared at her, dumbfounded as to what she could be talking about. This was getting more and more interesting. He picked up his glass and eyed it. “To my recollection, I’ve seldom, if ever been the callous type.”

“You know what they say.” She shrugged. “If the shoe fits.”

Her sassy, bravado act came across purely as self-preservation, and there was something poignant in that. What was it about her that could both irritate and tug on his heartstrings all at the same time?

She blinked and glanced toward the door.

“Waiting for reinforcements?”

Her eyes widened a fraction.

“I thought so.” He shook his head. “No one’s coming. It’s just you and me.”

Rogue’s Son by Darcy Flynn on sale for $.99 through 11/28/14

Blurb:

Tough, driven Kit Kendall replaced her frills and dresses with no-nonsense haircuts and wranglers, years ago. As owner of Sage Brush, the once-thriving west Texas bed and breakfast ranch, she now struggles daily to keep her business afloat. Since McCabe Resort Lodge reopened next door as a multi-million dollar hotel, her financial difficulties compound, as she suffers one cancellation after another.

Just when she thought things couldn’t get any worse, Kit’s childhood sweetheart-turned-nemesis returns as the new owner of the resort that’s now putting her out of business, resurrecting memories she thought she’d buried long ago.

Cowboy- entrepreneur Sam Dawson has returned to Sugar Creek, Texas after six years of exile with a secret that could destroy Kit’s happiness. He left town because of it and for the past two years has secretly tried to make it right. Having failed, he now returns to make one last attempt to undo the tangled web created by his father.

Set in motion by his father’s Last Will and Testament and with the clock ticking, Sam has only weeks to convince Kit to sell him her ranch, or reveal the truth that will break her heart.

Excerpt.

Sam could tell she was spitting mad. He watched her jerk the seatbelt over her chest several times before he reached over to click it into place.

He straightened up and glanced at her as he turned into the street. “Is that steam I see coming from your ears?”

Kit responded by snapping her arms across her chest.

He heaved a sigh and shook his head. “She told you, didn’t she?”

Kit didn’t say a word she just stared out the window.

“I’m sorry you had to find out that way. I was going to stop by tonight and tell you myself.”

“How thoughtful of you. So. What do you want?”

“Sorry?”

“For access to the land. Otherwise my guests have no place to hunt or fish.”

“Sell me the road frontage I need.” He’d deliberately forced her hand and hated himself for it. But far better for her to part with a few measly acres than lose everything. And if she ended up hating him in the process then so be it. He cursed both their fathers under his breath.

Kit’s mouth fell open and she slowly turned to face him, hoarse laughter tumbling from her lips.

“You’ve got to be kidding. After this stunt, do you really think I’d sell an inch of my property to you? One Kendall made the mistake of caving to a Dawson’s blackmail, but let me assure you, this one won’t.”

He hated what he was about to do. Hated to force her hand, but she gave him no choice. When did she become so stubborn? Gritting his teeth, he continued.

“Then I won’t allow you to use the Lowman property for access. You’ll be forced to shut down. Sage Brush will close. You’ll be through. You’ll lose your property to the bank when they foreclose. Then it’ll only be a matter of time before I have it all anyway. Is that really what you want?”

“Why you no good, conniving, lowlife.”

“Look at it this way, if I get the road frontage I need, then you get to stay in business. It’s a win-win.”

They slowed to a stop outside of her house.

Kit opened the truck door then turned to face him.

“You would actually do that? You’d put Trip and Jake out of work? And what about Maggie? Have you even thought of her?”

“I told you, you wouldn’t like it.”
