Montana Sky Kindle World Launches

all covers_blog

The launch of the “Montana Sky Kindle World” is here. Historical stories created by a variety of authors are either set in or the characters wander through the towns of Sweetwater Springs and Morgan’s Crossing created by Debra Holland in her bestselling Montana Sky series.

Fourteen authors are involved in the initial launch, and the stories occur from September and October 1886 through the summer of 1888. Of course, each contains the author’s individual writing style,  and some are tie-ins to an ongoing series. Each is a stand-alone story that includes one or a few of the characters Debra has created in her previous Montana Sky or Mail-Order Brides of the West titles.

My title in the exciting venture is Laced By Love.  In early October 1886, a vaudeville troupe arrives in Morgan’s Crossing late in the traveling season. When an event occurs that shakes up the troupe, seamstress Cinnia decides to say no to older sister Nola who has made the sisters’ decisions since being orphaned a decade earlier. Leather worker Nicolai Andrusha is lying low and using an alias until the patent is approved on his family’s leather tanning formula. But he finds the auburn-haired poetess irresistible. Will Nicolai risk opposing his family obligation to help the stranded beauty who has caught his eye?

Release Day–Libbie: Bride of Arizona

Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to become involved in an unprecedented author event where 45 authors got together to write a mail-order bride story connected to each US state. The collaboration and support from all the authors have been phenomenal.

Today is release day for Libbie: Bride of Arizona, book #48 in American Mail-Order Brides series.

I had so much fun writing this story of a woman who has been raised in Australia and South Africa with brief visits to Boston—all related to her father’s business pursuits. Libbie is tomboyish and pampered and has three older brothers. So when she’s sent to a woman’s academy in Boston because her mother decides the time has come to learn feminine etiquette, Libbie struggles to discover how she fits in. Then tragedy strikes and she’s forced to answer an ad in the Groom’s Gazette and become a mail-order bride.

Alone for the first time, tomboyish Libbie Van Eycken accepts a mail-order proposal and travels across country to find a place to call her own. Arizona rancher Dell Stirling needs a wife but didn’t count on the eccentric creature that brings chaos in her wake.

*The title is also included in Kindle Unlimited program.

The website where information on all the stories can be found is here:

Plus a Facebook page is devoted to the series:

I’m offering the chance for a $15 Amazon gift card to one person who leaves a comment here or on the Libbie’s release day thread on the American Mail-Order Brides Facebook page.

My Latest Release–A Cowboy Celebration

I’m so pleased to be included in this anthology of seven holiday stories written by great western romance authors. My story is titled Forged By Fire and features a blacksmith and a boarding house cook. Yes, I know what the anthology is titled but as soon as I started thinking about hot summer in central Texas, I pictured a blacksmith slaving away at his forge. And then he hears lovely notes sung by a beauty (get the beauty and the beast theme?), and I just had to write Berg’s story. My contribution to the recipes that accompanied each story is a recipe for Buttermilk Crispy Chicken. Yummy!

Forged By Fire

Can a wounded soul find solace in the attentions from a cook who nurtures through her culinary creations?

Ivey Treadwell, cook at her family’s boarding house, wants to accomplish something big. For now, she satisfies herself with improving on the traditional recipes for the boarders by adding herbs and spices she gathers. An incident with a broken pan causes her to see Berg Spengler, the town’s blacksmith, in a new light.

Stigmatized for his huge size and blamed for his brother’s injury, Berg has discovered being alone is safer for his heart. But when he sees interest spark in Ivey’s eyes, he decides to take a chance and approach her. The pair discovers an attraction that heats up each time they are alone together. Will Ivey convince Berg his wandering days are over and home is here with her in Comfort?

Upcoming Self-Editing Workshop

I’m teaching “Catch An Editor’s Eye with Active Writing” from May 11-15. In this workshop, 5 craft areas will be explained, with incorrect structures given as examples and a revision of each provided. The craft issues highlighted are:

  • active versus passive verb tense
  • reduction of adverbs and boosting verbs
  • strengthening expletive construction
  • cause and effect structure
  • position of power words

The cool thing is participants will work on 10 or 15 pages (total number depends on class enrollment) from their own manuscripts. So by the end of the week, you will have completed 5 drafts of revision. Workshop is taught through Yahoo Groups administered by Trans Canada Romance Writers. Registration deadline is May 10th.

Spotlight on Backlist Title–Stepping Out Of Line

I don’t know exactly what draws me to dance scenes except that they are often the most sensual aspect of a sweet romance story. Here is an excerpt from a release from five years ago, Stepping Out Of Line, which was included as a title in the Wayback, Texas series released by The Wild Rose Press.

Dev knew he should pull his gaze from her slender throat but the graceful movements as she swallowed were hypnotic. What unique trait about this woman called to him? His fingers tightened on the beer bottle. Quit gawking and say something, dummy. “Band has a good sound. Are they local?”

She turned and nodded, a smile exposing even, white teeth. “Three are from Soledad, about thirty miles away. For this part of north Texas, that’s almost in our backyard.”

“I hear ya there.”

“So you know about rural towns.” She leaned an elbow on the bar and turned to face him, her gaze flicking over his face. “Your accent’s a bit different. You a native Texan?”

“Nope.” Perceptive, he liked that. “Raised in Chenoa, just a wide spot in the road in central Oklahoma. Got a few acres and some cattle there.”

Green eyes rounded and her lips tightened. With a sharp nod, she turned her attention to the mug in her hands. “So, you’re in Wayback for the rodeo.”

His gaze narrowed. What was that heavy note he caught in her voice? Even drawn into a tight line, her lips grabbed his attention. Made him want to make her smile again. “Might be.” If his body cooperated enough to allow him to compete in the upcoming rodeo. “You sound disappointed.”

“It shows?” She lifted her mug and sipped, but kept staring straight ahead. “Sorry. Knee-jerk reaction.”

Again, his gaze ran over her—the slender woman dressed like a native but didn’t like rodeos. Interesting twist. “From where I sit, the rodeo isn’t the only attraction in town.”

She ducked her head then took a deep breath.

Dev would have sworn he saw a flash of white teeth before her red hair swung forward and hid her face. Well, all right. The lady wasn’t immune to his manner—or his attention.

Roxie braced both hands on the bar and stood. “Nice meeting you, Dev, but I’ll be saying goodnight.”

Not so fast. Dev reached out a hand and covered hers. “Hey, don’t go.” Beneath his rough palm, her fingers were warm and soft. He couldn’t resist running a thumb along the top of her pinky.

She lifted her chin and met his gaze, eyebrow raised in question. “Because…?”

The first notes of a familiar Bob Seger song sounded from the jukebox.

“Because this is my favorite song.” He slid his mouth into his best cajoling grin. Keeping a solid hold on her hand, he stood and eased around the stool with deliberate moves. “Honor me with a dance?”

“Honor you?” Roxie tilted her head to the side and laughed. “Wow, I haven’t heard that phrase in years.”

“What can I say?” Dev moved close and slid an arm around her waist, urging her forward. “My grandma was a stickler for manners.” Within a few steps, he stopped and held out his free hand, palm up.

Roxie hesitated for just a second and then slid her hand up his arm to lie on his shoulder. “Manners are good.”

Character Interview from Tie Down My Heart

Today I’m featuring an interview with the Native American hero of my contemporary rodeo western romance, Tie Down My Heart. Chay Red Fox hasn’t had an easy life but it’s been one he’s lived on his own terms. Like the hero portrayed in the current movie, “The Longest Ride”, rodeo is what Chay knows and loves.

How about you introduce yourself by providing the basics?

Chayton Red Fox, of the Foot-Trails People and born for the Deer Spring clan. I’ve reached the end of the third decade of my life. For better or worse.

Where were you raised?

Navajo Nation in New Mexico.

Family members?

A grandmother, older sister and nephew

Did you attend college?

More like the school of hard knocks. I trailed my father around rodeos whenever he’d left me, watching and learning, and they finally let me compete when I turned sixteen.

What’s your favorite participation sport?

(Quirks an eyebrow) Really? Isn’t the answer obvious?

Did you always want to be a rodeo competitor?

Always loved horses—it’s in the blood, you know. I wanted to do anything that got me off the rez and into the wide world.

Where did you go for your most recent vacation?

Vacation? That’s a concept of the white world. Natives take a walk on Mother Earth or sit beside a clear running stream and feel re-energized.

What attracts you first to a woman?

A woman who doesn’t back down to my cynical mouth.

Are you talking about a particular woman?

(Chuckles) That’d be saying too much.

Romancing The Eight

As part of this promotion featured by Trans Canada Romance Writers, here are eight sentences from When My Heart Knew, a story in the Cowboy Kisses Valentine’s Day-themed anthology published by Prairie Rose Publications.

Mr. MacInnes settled his hat on his head and held out a hand. “The blasted thing is throbbing like a son of a gun. Help me up.”

Maisie averted her face, scurried across the aisle to the farthest empty stall, and grabbed an armful of hay. Her attention was focused on the conversation between the men. Although the man wasn’t truly handsome, there was something about his face that intrigued her. Could be the deep set eyes under a broad forehead or his nose with a small bump on the bridge or his strong jaw shadowed with whiskers. Like a warrior from olden times she’d seen in a fairy tale book.
