LEAP INTO THE KNIGHT June 17

BLURB

Sir Darius Lee is a Knight of the High Order.

But when Darius wakes to discover a beautiful female intruder in his room, he begins to question his vows and how he lives his life.

Princess Megan of Bethyea is being held captive.

But when two knights help her to escape and bring her back to her home planet, she finds the home she knew no longer exists.

The Council of Twelve has questions about Maggie and Darius’ budding relationship.

Will Darius lose his Knighthood? And what about Orion’s feelings for Maggie? The questions abound for these romantic Knights.

EXCERPT

Orion’s feet hit the bottom of the stairwell and he crossed the short distance to the door. After yanking it open, he stepped out into what were undoubtedly the laundry facilities. He was met by the heavy and unpleasant odor of mingled mold, flowery detergent, and the acidic smell of dry-cleaning chemicals. His eyes quickly adjusted to the bright light spilling from naked bulbs hanging from the ceiling. The heat and humidity were so thick they could almost drink it like a soup. He surveyed the area in dismay. The girl could have gone anywhere in the vast room running the length of the building.

Darius entered seconds behind him, seeming to take it all in instantaneously. They scanned the floor for clues. Maybe she had stepped in one of the many puddles left by the condensation dripping from pipes and left footsteps to follow. But no such luck. Orion was about to give up when Darius called out, “There.” He pointed to some windows near the top of the wall.

One window was cracked open a few inches and he could see where fingers had wiped away steam in the places they grabbed the glass and left droplets of water racing each other down the pane. He wondered how anyone could fit through so small an opening while at the same time, he tried to re-visualize the layout of the building.

“This way,” he called over his shoulder as he dodged laundry carts.

He found the door they needed, and they soon soaked in the crisp night. Bright light illuminated the lawn around the compound, ending at the edge of a wood. He felt certain the girl was lost, but as he watched, his master closed his eyes and seemed to center himself, breathing deep in the cool outside air. He had never met someone who could access their Inner Spirit so easily. But what could it possibly tell Darius now? Surely his master could not have formed a connection to this woman in such a short time, and Orion knew a spiritual connection was needed to track someone without physical clues to go on. Yet as he watched, he knew somehow the Knight would find her.

Darius opened his eyes and said purposefully, “This way.” He stepped out with certainty toward the nearest copse of trees.

They soon hurried through the woods, following what seemed to Orion to be an invisible path, although here and there he thought he caught glimpses of trampled grass and broken twigs. At last his master slowed his pace, much to his relief, as he struggled, despite his own tall frame, to keep up with Darius’s long strides. Darius motioned silently, indicating the stranger was ahead. They moved forward, trying to make no sounds that might alert her to their presence.

Within seconds, they arrived on the edge of a clearing bordering a large body of water. At first glimpse it appeared to be a natural lake with a gentle waterfall tumbling into it from a small stream to their right. But upon closer inspection Orion realized it was a little man-made oasis. What he initially thought to be rock was actually some kind of synthetic material with spaces created at regular intervals for people to sit, half-submerged in the water.

The girl stood on the edge of what appeared to be a large, upward-sloping outcropping of rock, but now he saw it was actually a cleverly designed diving platform for the pool.

Darius held up his hand and made a circular motion, gesturing to the far side of the pool. Orion nodded and circled around quietly in the brush beneath the covering of trees to the far side of the “lake.” He understood his task was to wait there in the event the girl should attempt to flee across the lake when cornered on the rock.

***

Darius waited in the stillness for Orion to reach the far side of the pool. The light changed, making it easier to watch the girl, but also allowing her to see him on the fringe of the woods. He guessed she’d stopped to rest after escaping into the woods and she didn’t suspect they had followed her here. He watched from slightly below where she stood on the ledge. Her lone figure was silhouetted in the growing dawn, and he speculated on whether this could be the woman they were sent to find. He didn’t take his eyes off her, but not out of the usual devotion to the mission. He simply was compelled to do so.

He wondered what it was he found so striking, so intriguing about this particular woman. He often met beautiful women in the course of his travels throughout the universe, and while he could appreciate their attractiveness, their physical appearance meant very little to him. They were merely features to note on his mental checklist of their description, like anyone else’s features. But this stranger who had not spoken a word to him, he discovered himself riveted to for some reason.

Completely out of character. But the change quietly thrilled him.

Character Interview from A Knight To Remember by M.J. Schiller

A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER cover

Tell us your name.

I’m called Orion.

Where were you raised?

When I was a small child my parents saw something in me, and left me at the Academy of the High Order. That was where I was raised. My instructors and fellow students became my family, but of course I was closest with my mentor, Sir Darius Lee. When Darius married, his wife, Maggie, became like a sister to me. Sort of. We also have a kind of odd assortment of friends we have gathered throughout our travels across the galaxy that I would consider part of my family.

The Academy was a beautiful place to grow up. It is kind of like a huge crystal palace built into the side of a cliff on the planet Albion.

Are you athletic?

I’m not quite sure what you mean by ath-let-tic. I am fit. My coordination was honed at the Academy through many classes and exercises. I feel I had some natural talents to begin with, but I learned a lot from my Master, Darius, and even Maggie. *grins* Yes, she’s taught me a thing or two. And I like to think I’ve learned from every opponent I’ve faced as well. That’s the only way you can get better.

Did you always want to be a Knight?

Well, it wasn’t like I was given a choice. But, yes. It is an honorable job. I like serving the common good and trying to protect the innocent from those who mean them harm. Plus, I get to meet all sorts of people and travel to amazing places. Some dark and miserable, some unbelievably beautiful.

What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you?

Ha! Ha! Where do I start? One of the craziest, and most wonderful things that has ever happened to me actually happened on my wedding night. No, before that. Although that was wonderful…and amazing… Ahem. What I was referring to was when my wife sang this little number…she was wearing this red boa and man! The way she moved! Mmm.

Talk about your favorite setting for a date. (or favorite way to court a woman)

There has only been one woman for me. And we’ve only really been on one date. We went to this place that Darius and I trained at. It was quite a hike up to the spot I wanted to share with her, but well worth the effort. The scenery was spectacular. A lovely spot for a dip in the water with a woman who made me forget about all of it. All I was aware of was her.

I was born in Overland Park, KS, grew up in St. Louis, MO, went to school at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and moved to Bloomington, IL fresh out of college. I like to karaoke and attend rock concerts. I’m also actively involved at church and spend too much time on Facebook. I am the mother of a twenty-year-old and eighteen-year-old triplets, and have been married to my husband, Don, for over twenty-five years.

Character Interview–Blackout by M.J. Schiller

Blackout_CVR_MED

How about you introduce yourself by providing the basics?

Hi, I’m Eli Batronis. So, you mean basics like single, white male, from those personal ads? Well, I guess I’m all of those things. I’ve worked construction for most of my life in New York City, but I recently moved to Chicago, where I bartend and attend school. I enjoyed working construction. Good, hard, physical work that clears your mind. You really shouldn’t be thinking of much from twenty stories up, other than your work, and not falling off the girder you’re standing on. I like being in the outdoors, too, and being able to physically see the progress of your work and leave a part of yourself behind at each job.

Where were you raised?

I’m from Beacon, New York, but we left there when I was seven. When my father died. I’ve lived in New York City until just recently, so I guess I’d call that home. I moved to Chicago. I had to leave because of Faith. So that I could make myself a better man.

Family members?

Just me and my mom. And I guess you could include her new husband, Al. He’s a great guy, actually.

Did you attend college?

Not until I was the oldster in the classroom. I went back to school to study architecture. So I could be the guy designing the buildings instead of just the one doing all of the grunt work.

What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you?

Geez! That’d be a tie. I met the woman that I love in a blackout when our elevator crashed. I guess you’d call that pretty crazy. And I saved a guy once from doing a headfirst dive off one of our construction sites, several stories up. That was definitely crazy. Faith would say certifiable.

Talk about your favorite setting for a date. (or favorite way to court a woman)

Okay, this is going to sound totally corny, and I understand that a lot of women wouldn’t like this, but Faith did, and that’s all that mattered. I liked to take her to all those lousy touristy places in New York. You know, Times Square, Central Park, Rockefeller Center… She’d always dreamed of seeing them. But work and a lack of funds got in her way, so I wanted to be the one to show them to her.

What attracts you first to a woman?

Well, you know…I’m a guy, so…*clears throat*  I’d have to say her body, her looks. And then, I hate to say it, but I’d look for a shallowness about her. The sense that she was only into me for the physical nature of the relationship, too. But that was all before I met Faith. Faith is beautiful inside and out, and I knew it right from the start. Right from the moment I first laid eyes on her. Meeting her was a total game changer.

Welding Steel Structure on Structure In Workshop

Howdy! I’m Max Theobald and I’m the hero of BLACKOUT so I thought I’d just sort of hijack this here interview and let you know a few things about myself. I used to work with Eli in construction while I was finishing up med school, but now I’m an intern.

Where were you raised?

Albany, New York. My parents are both doctors there. That’s why I went into the profession. That, and the fact that, although I like to kid around a lot, I really do like helping people, as unoriginal as that sounds.

Are you athletic?

Doesn’t it show? Nah. There I go again, joking with ya. I wouldn’t call myself an athlete, but I do enjoy running.

Are you a pet person?

I wouldn’t mind having a pooch. Or a cat, if Faith wanted one. But apartment living isn’t very conducive to having pets.

What are your reading tastes?

Somewhat eclectic. I like the classics. Yes, even Shakespeare. I love a good spy book, Tom Clancy or the like. Any kind of thriller. I think I own every Stephen King book ever written, including his biography! I’ve even read a romance or two. When stuck on a late shift without reading material.

Where did you go for your most recent vacation?

I traveled extensively with my folks, but my favorite trip was my most recent one to Hawaii with Faith. It was incredible. Seeing things again through her eyes gives them a sort of magical quality.

Talk about your favorite setting for a date.

Well, unlike Eli I like to wine and dine my women. Take them to the best places. But honestly, the best times I’ve had with Faith have been doing everyday stuff. Like washing the dishes. That woman can do some mean things with a dishtowel, let me tell you!

What attracts you first to a woman?

Well, like Eli I used to go in for just the physical. The prettier the better. Faith, of course, is gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. But not in that polished, made-up kind of way. Damn! I never thought I’d be the sap heartsick over some woman. Just goes to show you—you just never know what life has in store for you. Even when you think you do.

Blurb ~

Can she betray the man she loves to save him?

An explosion rips Darius away from Maggie. Everyone believes him to be dead, but in her heart she knows it’s not true.

Will he betray The Order to make his way back to her?

Darius’s captor wants information about Council members.  Will duty win out over love?

Will he betray his best friend for the woman he loves?

Orion has learned to keep his distance from Maggie, but when circumstances throw them together in a very intimate way, how can he be expected to remain a loyal friend to Darius?

Excerpt ~

He entered a hallway lined with doors on either side. About halfway up a patch of light on the polished wood stretched from one of the doorways and then became slimmer and slimmer, disappearing as the door slid shut. He picked up his pace, but footsteps approached from a side hallway. Ducking into a doorway, he flattened himself against the cold metal, his heart racing. The footsteps echoed loudly on the flooring, but soon became more distant. Daring to stick his head out, he got a glimpse of the back of someone turning onto another corridor. He estimated the spot where he thought the light shone on the floor, then strode to the door, took a deep breath, and punched the keypad.

He was horrorstruck when the door opened. Maggie knelt at the foot of a brass bed facing it with her arms spread wide, electro-cuffed to the bedposts. The ape called Mic brought a whip crashing down on her back. Orion jumped at the sharp crack, wincing. He rushed forward and grabbed the slaver’s arm as he pulled it back for another blow. He ripped the whip from the meaty fist and threw it across the room where it knocked over a lamp. Mic whirled in a rage but was laid low by a single punch to his jaw. He staggered backward into the bed and slid slowly, almost comically, to the floor.

“Maggie.”

He hurried to her side, kneeling and laying his hands on her bare arms. “I’m so sorry.” He peered over her shoulder to see her exposed lower back and the welt already rising there.

“I’m okay.” She leaned to peer around the side of the bed at Mic’s prone figure. “Wow. I guess it is true. The bigger they are, the harder they do fall.” The corners of her lips turned up, but her eyes watered.

He smiled back, relieved she was safe. For the moment anyhow. He ran his hands along her arms to the electro-cuffs and deactivated them. They fell from her wrists, and she grabbed the bars of the bed to help her to her feet. She sucked in her breath through her teeth, then halted, appearing to gather herself for a few seconds. “I’ve got an idea about how I can get into the slave quarters.”
