Author Interview–Linda O. Johnston

Today I’m chatting with an author friend from my Orange County RWA chapter.

Tell us a bit about you and your background.

I’m a transactional attorney by background, but am officially inactive in my legal career.  I’ve always written but started writing fiction seriously while practicing law, and am now a full-time novelist.

What’s the logline that describes your writing?

It’s not exactly a logline, but my favorite quote is “Reality is for those who lack imagination.”
What are your hobbies away from the computer?

You mean there is life away from the computer?  Oh, yes, how could I forget?  My dogs tend to take up any time I’m not on the computer and also interrupt me a lot while I’m there.

Have you traveled to any locations that appear in your books?

My two earlier mystery series both took place in LA’s San Fernando Valley, where I live.  Alpha Force, the covert military unit in my Harlequin Nocturnes, is headquartered on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and I’ve been there, as well as to some of the places where the stories occur, such as western Canada.  I’ve had some books take place in Alaska and England, and I’ve visited there.  My two newest mystery series take place in fictional Southern California towns which I would love to visit, especially Destiny, California, which is all about superstitions.

Do you write in a genre other than the one of this release?

Yes.  CANADIAN WOLF is the seventh in my Alpha Force miniseries for Harlequin Nocturne, a paranormal romance, and it is a September 2015 release.  KNOCK ON WOOD, the second Superstition Mystery, will be published in October 2015.  I additionally write the Barkery & Biscuits Mysteries as well as another miniseries for Harlequin Romantic Suspense.  Did you add them up?  I’m now writing four series concurrently!

Are you a pet person? If so, what do you have?

Absolutely!  I’m all about pets.  All of my cozy mystery series have dogs in them as well as, sometimes, other pets.  I even write about canines and other animals in my romances since I write the Alpha Force miniseries for Harlequin’s paranormal Nocturne series, all about a covert military unit of shapeshifters!

I’m owned by Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, who have me a lot better trained than I’ve trained them.

What do you hope readers gain from your stories?

I hope my readers enjoy what I write–and perhaps learn a little, too.   Not that I can tell them a whole lot about shapeshifters–only those in the world I’ve created.  I’ve had a lot of fun researching superstitions for my Superstition Mysteries, though, and hope those who read them find new ways of increasing their good luck!

He’s the one man she can never trust…

Sergeant Major Owen Dewirter lives every day with the guilt of having let a shifter hurt one of his own.  Now he’s being forced to work beside Alpha Force newcomer Selena to train a new covert unit of shifters for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and stop a rash of serial kidnappings.  Can Owen ignore his prejudices–and his fantasies–about this sexy new partner and do his job?

When their passion ignites in the remote Canadian woods, the tension between Owen and Selena puts the joint mission in jeopardy.  Can they learn to trust each other while tracking the enemy?  Or will a cunning foe lure them into a dark and deadly endgame?
