EXCERPT

In her life, Sara Matchett had committed three huge, earth-thumping, wildly stupid mistakes. She planned to confront them, wrestle them to the ground and, in the process, probably commit a whole swarm of new and even more idiotic screwups.

Then leave her hometown for the last time.

Why not? At nearly fifty, she’d reached the perfect age to turn her world, and everyone else’s, upside down.

“I think that’s a worthwhile goal, regardless of which secrets you plan to unload,” said seventy-one-year-old Aunt Jewell, clear-wrapping a plate of cookies in her kitchen. “In fact, I’m dying to hear about them. What would Christmas be without a soap opera?”

“And I have a lot of experience in the field,” Sara conceded as she snapped a lid atop the cranberry-orange stuffing casserole she’d prepared.

She wished the kitchen had a mirror so she could check whether her green velvet dress was too fussy. Were the stars she’d embroidered ridiculous on a grown woman? “If I ever write my memoirs, I’ll call them, I Was a Teenage Drama Queen.”

“Why limit yourself to the past when you have such talent?” deadpanned her aunt, who sported her own original outfit, red with sparkles cascading along the bodice and skirt. She’d tucked a glittery comb into the dyed jet-black hair. Sara hoped that, in another twenty years, she’d have as much panache as her aunt.

“I’m not sure I’m as gifted as that.” Hearing the quaver in her voice, Sara swept into the living room, ready to head out the door. Might as well get it over with.

Until this moment, she hadn’t allowed herself to dwell on exactly what might happen when she arrived at the family celebration and set the record straight with her sisters. Not that Sara wished to dampen anyone’s holiday, but they deserved to learn why she hadn’t been part of their little world in Rancho Allegro, California, for thirty years…

Also, she didn’t plan to miss Jewell’s upcoming marriage, which was the main reason for her extended visit. After a decade of widowhood, her aunt was remarrying and had requested that Sara, the only one of her three nieces to share her artistic talents, help prepare for the event in late January….

Sara yanked her thoughts back to today’s planned gathering. This would involve people new to her, including her sisters’ bridegrooms and their offspring from previous marriages. Well, she could tolerate having an audience. Just as long as she didn’t have to see the one person who knew too much, and had hurt her more than almost all the others put together.

Although Dr. Nate Patton shared a medical practice with her sister, Cody, there was no reason for Sara to run into him. Not today, at least. He’d no doubt be celebrating the holiday with his relatives.

Character Interview-Rachel from Wish List Addiction

Today I have Prism Book Group friend, Lindsey Paley, here with an interview of the heroine from her August release, The Wish List Addiction.

How about you introduce yourself?

Hi, I’m Rebecca Mathews, thirty-two-year old, stressed out ex-lawyer and harassed mother of Max, my fabulous four-year-old son. I have copper-coloured hair, which I hated as I went through school but grew to love when at college, and emerald green eyes. I live in a dingy one-bedroomed apartment in Hammersmith, London and have a full-time job as a para-legal at Baringer & Co. Oh, and I’m a listoholic!

The worst part of my life is the daily struggle to get Max off to the day care he loathes in order to battle my ( single, childless) boss, Lucinda to be able to pay our exorbitant rent as Max’s dead beat father, Bradley, refuses to contribute child maintenance – it eats into his personal grooming and entertainment allowance. The best part of my life, of course, is Max. Oh, and my discovery of ‘The Little Green Book of Wishes’.

 Where were you raised?

I was raised in the tiny village of Matfen in Northumberland, the largest and most rural county of England. I am an only child of George and Marianne who could not fathom the draw of the bright lights and fume-ridden atmosphere of London. It turned out they were both right as, when I became a mom, all I dreamed of was returning home to raise Max in the rural surroundings I was so happy in. But that dream was the catalyst to my downfall! Buying that rundown cottage was a stupid decision, despite the numerous lists I drafted of the pro’s and con’s of leaving London.

Did you always want to be a lawyer?

I did, yes. I enjoyed every moment of the study for my degree and I was fortunate enough to get a great job with a Top Ten law firm in London. I’d even started building up my reputation as a matrimonial litigation specialist until Brad dropped his bombshell that he was leaving me and Max and refused to provide any financial support. I couldn’t sell ‘Rosemary Cottage’ and the bank foreclosed. I lost my job and it was only the offer of a para-legal post that saved Max and I from destitution. I should have returned home, but I did hope that Brad would come round and see his son. He didn’t.

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you?

Well, that would be three things. Firstly, of course, Max. Then, the unearthing of ‘The Little Green Book of Wishes’. I truly believe that my colleagues, Deb and Nathan’s idea to challenge me to a bunch of off-the-wall activities, and their refusal to allow me to continue with my list-making obsession, turned my life around. I mean, who wouldn’t want to give kite-flying, dancing the Tango or learning to play golf a go? I’d urge any of your readers to grab a copy of ‘The Little Green Book’ – available on Amazon.com – and give it a try! It worked for me and led to the third best thing on my list (Ooops – sorry – here’s me telling you I’m cured!) the new man in my life, Josh Charlton – rugby-playing hunk extraordinaire!!

BLURB:

Rebecca Mathews is a Listoholic—you name it, she has a ‘To Do’ list for it. Coupled with her daily ‘Must Achieve’ List, she possesses a mid-term, creatively drawn ‘Wish List’ and an exhaustively-researched ‘Bucket List’. But so far, they have delivered nothing but spectacular failure.

With her much-loved career exploded in her face, her marriage terminated in an acrimonious divorce and her frail father’s pleas to return to her native Northumberland ignored, Rebecca concludes that if it wasn’t for her beloved four-year-old son, Max, she would be adding a trip to a Swiss clinic to her list.

A sparkle of light appears in Rebecca’s life wrapped in the guise of ‘The Little Green Book of Wishes’, which challenges the reader to ‘ditch the list’ and instead to use its gems of wisdom as a ‘dip in/dip out’ lucky bag of challenges from all areas of life.

Persuaded by her colleagues to relinquish her obsessive reliance on her multiple lists, cast adrift from their reassuring structure, she agrees to complete random tasks selected for her from the ‘little emerald book of miracles’.

Will it deliver the desired result and cure Rebecca of her Wish List Addiction?

Release Promotion–Without Mercy by Alicia Dean

Without Mercy Large

BLURB:

When an apparently random bank robbery turns out to be a sinister plan, single mother China Beckett is thrust into a nightmare. A group of mercenaries take over her life, threatening her young daughter and everyone they love. She’ll fight to the last breath to protect her child, but that might not be enough.

With time running out and no one to turn to, China fears the worst for her daughter. But then, a startling truth is revealed, and she discovers that the only person who can save them might be a ghost from the past.

EXCERPT:

China gasped. “Are you insinuating I had something to do with Sophie’s murder?”

Detective Boyle turned an innocent look her way. “I’m insinuating nothing of the kind. Why would you think that?”

“I just thought…you sounded like…” She blew out a breath. “Never mind. Please, let’s just hurry and get this over with.”

“As I was saying, you were spared. The robbers called you by name. They seemed to almost defer to you in a way.”

“Defer to me?” Her laugh was short and devoid of humor. “I was nearly killed. They murdered my boss in front of my eyes. Pointed a gun at my best friend—”

“And didn’t shoot her when you told them not to,” he cut in.

“Dear God! You think they were following my orders?” She shot to her feet. “Do you think I’m glad they shot my boss? This is bullshit. Are you charging me with something? Do I need a lawyer?”

“Do you?” He didn’t wait for an answer. “Take it easy, Miss Beckett. Please sit. I’m not accusing you of anything. I’m simply trying to solve a crime. Trying to catch some bad guys. You want to help me with that, right?”

More than you could possibly know. She now wished she’d let Vanessa come with her, although the detective probably wouldn’t have let her sit in on the interview.

He stood and held a hand out toward the door. “Come with me. I’d like to show you something.”

China followed him into a large room that held a long table with chairs on either side. At one end of the table was a small television. Detective Boyle walked over to the television and pointed at the chair nearest it. “Sit, please.”

She did and he turned the power on the TV, then pushed a button on a remote. A grainy, black and white image appeared on the screen. The quality wasn’t state-of-the-art, but she recognized the scene. The bank. The robbery.

This time, she was able to see the shooting taking place, not just the end results. The guy who’d pointed the gun at Vanessa—and not the one who’d been China’s escort—had pulled the trigger. Had killed Sophie. Marcel, she was certain. She watched the glass shatter. Jerked when Sophie’s body jerked and blood blossomed on her blouse—dark gray now, not the vivid red she knew it to be.

There seemed to be no way the gunman could have missed her. She was standing there. Right there in front of Sophie’s desk, nearly blocking Sophie from the robber’s view, yet the bullets had gone straight past her and into Sophie’s body.

Her insides trembled with remembered terror. She stuck the knuckle of her index finger between her teeth and bit down. Tears filled her eyes, spilling down her cheeks, over her fingers. “Oh, God, Oh God, Oh God,” she whimpered over and over.

“You really should take it up,” Detective Boyle said.

“Huh?” She dropped her hand from her mouth and turned to him, seeing his face through a fog of horror and disbelief. This couldn’t be happening. The robbery, the men, the hell that her life had become. It couldn’t be happening. “Take it up?”

“Gambling. You should take it up. I mean, with your luck and all, you’d make a killing.” He studied her, his brows reaching for his hairline. “No pun intended.”
